Data Centers ... and what's to come

Our speaker yesterday spoke of developments in data center efficiency.  Here is an article from Wired magazine on Google's data centers.  Although this is not the latest and greatest.  That is secret.

The next big thing:  Quantum Computing.  The Canadian company which makes these is D-Wave.  Google has bought one and so has Lockheed Martin.

In devices:  A material called Graphene. Can't wait to dump my iPhone!

Learning from Hal Varian … about Mike Porter

Found this interesting article by Hal Varian (Google's Chief Economist …  well known to Economists who had to study his Advanced Micro book in grad school) in Google's quarterly magazine on some uber Google tools.  So I decided to look up 'interest' in Michael Porter.  Here is my chart:

OK, the regional data make sense, developing countries are likely to be more interested in building National Competitiveness (and Singapore of course is 'Kiasu')  Declining trend from 2004 to about 2007 and then pretty flat (good thing this is not the cluster blog!).  But then again, may be he is not traveling as much.  Drilling down to some of the regional numbers shows that searches peak when he visits a country.  So here is the chart for Kenya … interest peaks in mid-2007.  He gave a talk in Nairobi in June 2007.
